Joe Hansia

Hello Parents and Players,

I moved here from Northern California in 2016 with my beautiful wife, my daughter and my son. I work in the financial industry as my real day job. Besides Volleyball I enjoy running, road biking, video games with my family, oh… and FOOD. I also do some volunteer work, introducing volleyball to youths between ages 7-14 in a fun environment representing United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL). I am also on the board of Edmonds Chamber Foundation creating fun events such as the Taste Edmonds, July 4th Parade/fireworks, Sand sculpting event, tree lighting ceremony

I was introduced to volleyball when I was 12 years old. The style I was introduced to was not the traditional volleyball that we are all familiar with. It was the Indian way of volleyball that required the ball to go over the net in one touch per side and with 9 players on one side. It was very fast paced. Although I didn’t move much while playing this ping pong style, it really built my foundation in passing/digging the ball. During middle school and high school, I played many sports which includes soccer, water polo, badminton, basketball, tennis and volleyball so I know what it takes to build a team or play as an individual. When playing high school volleyball, I was the captain of the JV team and soon after that JV game, I played for Varsity team as an outside hitter because of my vertical and the control of my spike. I was awarded a plaque as “Most Improved Player” and made 2nd team in Marin County, California. I was set to play again the following year however moved to Bahrain and joined an international private school which offered many of the sports I played in United States. There I played volleyball for the school and was named MVP in my junior year. I then moved to Dubai, UAE where I stayed for 2 years. No sports there but ran….alot….and in the heat. Graduated from Clonlara High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan (online). I came back to the states in 2006 and played for College of Marin in California as outside left and right hitter. After college, I was recruited by a team that travels all around Northern California. Played and won in various leagues and tournaments both indoors and grass, coed, doubles, sixes, and fours… you name it. During this time, I played as libero, left and middle hitter. To name a few leagues I participated in: VolleyZoo/Volleynation that runs about 20 events throughout the year, VBMatch which holds competitive indoor league that invites players from Stanford, SF State and Berkeley Cal, and also a league that City of Novato holds with A level competition. Currently I play with A/E Volleyball, I have been recruited to play for Team Artichoke that has been around since 1986. I also started sand volleyball this year and am continuing to play in tournaments and leagues.

I have many philosophies in sports. To name a few:, Work hard and Play hard. Respect yourself and others. You get what you put in. 110% in practice so you can go 120% on game day. Have a healthy rivalry. Be crafty and have fun. I hope that I can pass on what I learned from experience to the girls so they can pass on what they learned creating a volleyJoe legacy.
